2nd batch of Pinoys set to leave Libya

THE second batch of Filipinos from Libya is set to leave the strife-torn country as soon as security situation there stabilizes, the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) said Sunday.
DFA spokesman Raul Hernandez said in a text message that officials of the Philippine embassy in Tripoli are preparing to repatriate the second batch of Filipinos through a ship chartered by the International Organization on Migration (IOM).
“Security situation permitting, Usec (Rafael) Seguis with Embassy officials will try again today to fetch OFWs in their workplaces and board them on a second boat chartered by IOM out of the port of Tripoli,” the DFA official said.
“Yesterday (Sunday), the team was unable to pick up some OFWs who renewed their interest to be repatriated because of the heavy fighting en route to their destination,” he added.
On Friday, the first batch of Filipino workers, numbering about 91, left the tension-gripped country also aboard an IOM-chartered ship.
The ship left the port of Tripoli en route to Benghazi where the foreign repatriates, including Filipinos, will proceed by land to Egypt.
From Egypt, the Filipinos will board a commercial flight to Manila.
The Philippine government will shoulder the cost of the Cairo-Manila route.

There are still more than 1,500 overseas Filipino workers left in Tripoli and its surrounding areas.
