4 storms to visit Philippines in September

STORMS as strong as Typhoon “Mina” (international codename: Namnadol) could hit the Philippines next month, state weather forecasters said Tuesday.
Science and Technology Undersecretary Graciano Yumul said these tropical cyclones are likely to make landfall, risking damages whose magnitude are similar to Mina’s, which destroyed agricultural lands in Northern Luzon and killed at least 22 people.
“We are expecting around three to four storms to enter the Philippines in September. The month is also associated with the peak of rainfall activity due to southwest monsoon. We asked the public to stay on guard,” he told Sun.Star.Mina, which carried center winds of up to 195 kilometers per hour before it slammed Cagayan last Saturday, is the 13th storm to visit the Philippines this year, eight howlers short of the expected 21 cyclones.
In a June advisory, the Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) said the latter part of September will also mark the weakening of the southwest monsoon to give way for the transition to the northeast monsoon.
Otherwise known as “amihan,” the northeasterly windflow originates from the frosty region of Siberia and is set to bring cold and sometimes wet weather in some parts of the country from November to March.
Meanwhile, six more people were confirmed dead a day after Mina left the country on Monday, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) said.
In its 6 a.m. bulletin Tuesday, the agency said additional fatalities were brought about by landslides in Baguio City and Zamboanga del Sur while drowning in Abra.
Around 300,000 people were affected by the storm in 16 provinces while the number of families staying in evacuation centers went down to 818 representing 3,713 people.
The NDRRMC said that the initial cost of damages to agriculture and infrastructure especially in the provinces of Cagayan, Isabela and Ilocos Norte was at P1.108 billion.
Over 30 bridges and road sections also remained closed to traffic due to landslides, scoured slope protection, and floods.(Virgil Lopez/Sunnex)
