600 Pinoys in Saudi qualified for pardon

SIX hundred Filipino nationals are estimated to be qualified recipients of the royal pardon set to be granted by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA), according to the group Migrante-Middle East.
In a statement, Migrante-Middle East regional coordinator John Leonard Monterona said the group’s estimate was based on the information it has on Filipinos currently imprisoned over petty crimes in KSA.
As per our estimates, there are about 400 to 600 OFWs languishing in Saudi jails for petty crime offenses, who may qualify for the royal pardon recently announced by the host government,” said Monterona.
He said the royal pardon grant by the Saudi government only covers petty crime offenses such as illicit affairs, mixed crowd, gambling, harboring criminals and absconders, and illegal possession of and selling liquor.
To note, Saudi King Abdullah bin Abdul Aziz had been granting clemency to all petty crime offenders without private rights liability during the Holy month of Ramadan in previous years.
The Migrante official related that he already brought the said information to Philippine ambassador-designate to Saudi Ezzadin Tago.
He quoted Tago as saying that the lists of Filipino inmates in various Saudi jails had been submitted to the different Saudi pardon committees.
Monterona claimed, though, that the Filipino official refused to divulge how many are included in the list.
“We hope that all of the Filipino inmates, whom embassy officials believed are qualified to avail the royal pardon, have been included on the lists submitted to pardon committees tasked to review their cases and eventually avail the pardon, will be released and repatriated,” Monterona said.
