Aquino not keen on meeting Luneta hostage crisis survivors

MALACANANG said there was no need for President Benigno Aquino III to meet the survivors of the bloody hostage-taking in Manila, noting that the government has already taken steps to address their concerns.
Presidential spokesperson Edwin Lacierda said the Palace has not yet received any request from the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) regarding the reported plans of several survivors to meet with the President in time for first anniversary of the tragedy on August 23.
Survivors of hostage crisis, namely Joe Chan Kwok-chu, Yik Siu-ling, and Lee Ying-chuen, were reportedly going to the Philippines to personally express to the President their concerns regarding their cases.
The group reportedly relayed the request to the Philippine Consulate General in Hong Kong over the weekend and the DFA confirmed that it already received the request.
The Hong Kong nationals are set to fly to Manila on Sunday.
Earlier reports said they wanted the Philippine government to issue an official apology, provide appropriate compensation for the victims, make officials accountable for the botched rescue operations, and implement measures to ensure safety of tourists.
But as far as Malacanang is concerned, Lacierda said the government already provided what the survivors were asking.
“We have apologized before, in fact, that was the briefing of the President. The President already expressed regrets over the incident. With respect to the compensation, there is a private initiative to provide a solidarity fund for the victims…I don’t know the status right now but I understand some of the families have already accepted the solidarity fund,” the Palace official said.
“We have installed more tourist police in the tourist areas. We have trained them. In fact, we have provided bicycles for them for greater mobility. There are night courts in place also. The night courts were designed precisely to address concerns of tourists at night when there’s no court. In addition, we have again upgraded our security services,” he added.
With respect to punishing officials, he said a number of involved officials have been relieved, including deputy ombudsman Emilio Gonzales III and Manila Police District chief Rodolfo Magtibay.
“We have been moving and understandably, it may not be to their satisfaction but they cannot accuse us of saying that we are not doing anything about the hostage taking incident,” Lacierda said.
Lacierda also said that the Palace does not want to get involved in the politics in Hong Kong.
“I understand there is a coming election in Hong Kong and the politician who is accompanying them is an oppositionist, there is some political, we don’t want to get involved,” he said.
