Bedol to be detained in Camp Crame
Tuesday, July 19, 2011
MANILA (3rd update, 12 p.m.) — Former Maguindanao election supervisor Lintang Bedol will now be detained at the Philippine National Police (PNP) custodial center in Camp Crame, Quezon City upon the decision of the Commission on Elections (Comelec).
Bedol, who voluntarily surrendered to the Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) Friday, was turned over to the Comelec Tuesday morning.
Bedol, escorted by police, arrived at the Comelec headquarters in Intramuros, Manila past 9 a.m. following the new arrest warrant issued against him for contempt.
In a Comelec en banc session where all commissioners were present except Rene Sarmiento, who is on leave after being dragged in the election fraud, the commissioners unanimously decided to detain Bedol at the PNP custodial center.
Bedol’ six-month service, which he was not able to comply with because he went into hiding, starts Tuesday. Bedol left the Comelec headquarters past 11 a.m.
Comelec chair Sixto Brillantes said the original arrest warrant states Bedol should be detained in Camp Bagong Diwa but alias warrant allows Comelec to designate detention facility.
He said they did not considered Camp Bagong Diwa because Zaldy Ampatuan, who also claimed that there was irregularities during the 2007 elections, is detained there.
“Ayaw namin pagsamahin si Zaldy Ampatuan at Bedol sa isang lugar. Ayaw naming magkakwentuhan,” Brillantes said.
The Comelec earlier issued an alias warrant, which is a copy of the original warrant of arrest, against Bedol in connection with the contempt case filed by the poll body in June 2007.
Brillantes earlier said the original arrest warrant against Bedol already expired in 2008.
In August 2007, Bedol was sentenced to six-month imprisonment after he repeatedly ignored the Comelec’s summonses, illegally assuming and losing custody of Maguindanao election documents and publicly challenging the poll body to file charges against him in 2007.
“Our priority is to secure Bedol in a convenient detention so he can immediately start serving his six-month sentence,” he added.
Last week, Bedol emerged from hiding and said poll fraud happened during the 2004 and 2007 elections.
He said it was former President and now Pampanga Representative Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo who masterminded the election fraud. (Sunnex)
