Bishop urges Filipinos to dispose of trash properly
Thursday, September 1, 2011
A BISHOP urged Filipinos to dispose of their garbage properly, adding that priests should also include environmental messages in their homilies.
“Caring for the environment is part of our Christian responsibility,” Bishop Deogracias Iniguez said on Wednesday, days after tons of garbage were washed ashore from the Manila Bay by Typhoon “Mina.”
“This is really a call for us to examine how we dispose our garbage,” said Iniguez, who is also chairman of the CBCP Public Affairs Committee. Earlier, Bishop Iniguez expressed support for the campaign of the Ecowaste Coalition, a waste and pollution watchdog, for a “litter-free Pilipinas”. The Catholic Church official also supported the group’s call for President Benigno Aquino III to spearhead a campaign for environmental protection.“I appeal to PNoy (Aquino) to take on the campaign against littering and for Zero Waste as a personal advocacy in the same way that he fought and won his fight against flashing sirens (wang-wang),” Iniguez earlier said.On Tuesday, the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) and the Manila City Department of Public Services undertook a clean-up of the stretch of Roxas Boulevard. The trash collected was enough to fill up 25 garbage trucks. Most of the items were non-biodegradable, including those made from as styrofoam, plastic bags, among others.
In a separate report, MMDA Chairman Francis Tolentino said barangay officials should be held accountable if their constituents fail to segregate their garbage.
He made these remarks on Wednesday, a few days after a retaining wall in a Baguio dumpsite collapsed, killing three people and leaving a pile of trash that rendered a highway impassable to motorists.
Haphazard trash disposal is one of the agency’s main problems despite its efforts to educate the public about its waste segregation scheme, he said.
“Problema talaga yung di pages-segregate ng ating mga kababayan ng basura sa kabila ng ating mga pinapatupad na polisiya,” Tolentino said, adding that barangay officials, since they knew their constituents as well as their jurisdiction, should also do their part in the campaign.
“Pinakamaganda talaga gawing accountable yung mga local officials, mga barangay officials sa problema sa basura,” he added.
Flooding in the city, especially during the rainy season, has been blamed on indiscriminate garbage dumping.
Under Republic Act 9003 or the Ecological Solid Waste Management Act, littering, throwing and dumping of waste matters in public places such as roads, sidewalks, canals, esteros or parks, and establishments are explicitly banned.
Violators upon conviction shall be punished with a fine of not less than P300 up to P1,000, or render community service for at least one day up to a maximum of 15 days in a local government unit where the act was committed.
As of August 31, the MMDA said 54,728 litterbugs were nabbed by their enforcers.
Metro Manila generates as much as 38,000 cubic meters of garbage on a daily basis with Manila leading the local government units in the volume of trash generated totaling some 8,000 cubic meters daily.
Like Tolentino, Umagat also called for greater public participation in the waste segregation scheme adding that no amount of program would suffice if they would not cooperate with the authorities. (FP/AH/Sunnex)
