Bloodletting drives conducted for dengue patients
August 25, 2011
CITY OF SAN FERNANDO — Members of the Philippine National Police, The Philippine Army, Capitol employees and volunteers joined Wednesday’s bloodletting campaign here.
It was organized by the Committee on Health and the Provincial Capitol at the Benigno Aquino Hall.
Governor Lilia Pineda said the blood donations would be used to address the blood requirements at the Jose B. Lingad (JBL) Memorial Regional Hospital, particularly, for dengue patients and emergency cases.
“This is one of our efforts to make sure that our patients are given proper attention. The blood donations will be deposited at the JBL and at partner private hospitals,” Pineda said, adding that the supply would be a great help to the standing blood supply of JBL.
Pineda said that patients who will benefit from the blood donation no longer need to replace the blood drawn from the JBL supply. Pineda added that supply is being screened properly to ensure safety.
Pineda said that another set of bloodletting activities will be held in the capitol in the coming weeks.
Joining the battle vs dengue
Hundreds of policemen on Tuesday joined other sectors in Central Luzon in on-going battle against dengue.
Though no outbreak has yet been declared by the regional health department, the cops led by Chief Superintendent Edgardo Ladao conducted a bloodletting drive at Camp Olivas.
“We join the Department of Health and the Philippine National Red Cross [Angeles City and Pampanga chapters] in the fight against dengue and providing solutions and probable assistance if they need blood,” Ladao said.
He said the move was in accordance with the directive of Police Deputy Director General Nicanor Bartome who ordered all Philippine National Police personnel to donate blood as a response to reported shortages in some areas in the country plagued by dengue.
From 183 volunteers, a total of 83,350 milliliters of blood of all types was generated.
Ladao said the bloodletting “aims to raise the consciousness of every PNP personnel to do a very noble and heroic act not only in their jobs but also through such life-saving endeavors.”
