Businessman files ethics complaint vs senator

A BUSINESSMAN whom Senator Miriam Defensor-Santiago had ushered out of the confirmation hearing for Foreign Affairs Secretary Albert Del Rosario in June has filed an ethics complaint against her.
Businessman Joseph Wong filed the complaint after Santiago, chair of the Commission on Appointments committee on foreign relations, had him removed from the premises for being “contemptuous” and for “insulting” the committee.
Wong attended the hearing to oppose Del Rosario’s appointment as Foreign Affairs secretary.
Wong said that Del Rosario was party to a syndicated estafa case pending at the Department of Justice.
Santiago scolded Wong for bringing the matter to the CA when it was “not a function of the committee to litigate a case.” She added that since Wong was not a lawyer, and he was bringing up a legal case, he should have attended the hearing accompanied by counsel.
“You come here and you can’t explain what his fault is,” she said before having Wong ushered out of the premises.
The office of Minority Leader Alan Peter Cayetano, chairman of the committee on ethics and privileges, confirmed that they received Wong’s complaint. His office did not release copies of the complaint, however, citing “ethical reasons.”
Under Senate rules, the ethics commitee has jurisdiction over “all matters relating to the conduct, rights, privileges, safety, dignity, integrity, and reputation of the Senate.” (Jonathan de Santos/Sunnex)
