City to field projects for Galing Pook Awards
Wednesday, February 2, 2011
CITY OF SAN FERNANDO — City Mayor Oscar Rodriguez revealed on Monday that the City Government is mulling on fielding exemplary barangay accomplishments for the upcoming Gawad Galing Pook Awards.
The city has 35 barangays, all now under “Oplan Habitat,” a campaign to make every nook and corner of San Fernando a habitat of human excellence, ridding it of problems in education, garbage and bottom-line poverty.
During the Barangay Budget Orientation held Monday at Heroes Hall, Rodriguez challenged the village chiefs to do their best for the Galing Pook awards, which the city earned last year for its efforts in business, education, governance and poverty alleviation.
“I would and could not do it alone. It is with your participation in good governance that we could do this,” Rodriguez told the village chiefs, adding that since he’s not a thief, and no one is stealing in the province, he doesn’t see any reason why their respective barangays could not succeed, “except of course kung may iba kayong agenda.”
Rodriguez further told them he hoped they would take all they could from the seminar because “it’s for your own good. The City Council is right now drafting an ordinance that would help you in governance.”
In a subsequent interview, Rodriguez told Sun.Star Pampanga that a lot of barangays in this city are qualified for the Galing Pook Awards, citing as example Barangay Sindalan, which he credited with having innovated garbage collection.
“Our challenge to them is to be more creative and innovative in terms of our programs. That is the essence of our participative governance. Madami nga sa mga barangays natin eh, benchmark na ng ibang cities,” Rodriguez concluded. (Jovi T. De Leon)
