Councilor: No more piggeries in 5 years
July 4, 2011
CITY OF SAN FERNANDO — Piggeries and poultry in Porac town will be gone in three to five years, a local official said.
Councilor Michael Tapang said town officials have started deliberating on the proposed Comprehensive Land Use Plan (CLUP) two weeks ago.
The CLUP is set to clarify land use in Porac town whether it is residential or for commercial use. It is also seen as the long-term solution to the protests of residents against hog farms that source foul smell.
Protests against these hog farms have started 20 years ago. But before administering the CLUP, the town needs a cadastral map first.
Tapang, also the chairman of the municipal’s trade and industry committee, said mapping efforts are ongoing.
“About 25 percent of the cadastral map is done and mapping efforts are continuing,” Tapang said.
The closure or relocation of the piggeries and poultry farms in Porac has been pushed by residents in some villages there.
Distressed residents blamed the illness and deaths of their colleagues to the foul stench released by the hog farms.
The Pinoy Gumising Ka Movement (PGKM) and the Krusada Kontra Amoy (KKA) are among the top green groups that have rallied against the piggeries in Porac.
PGKM president and businessman Ruperto Cruz said some foreign investors pulled out because of the foul smell.
Governor Lilia Pineda earlier ordered Mayor Condralito Dela Cruz not to issue business permits to the hog farms there.
However, it was found out that the hog farms are still operating despite Pineda’s order.
The Provincial Government is set to investigate on the hog farms’ continued operations.
