CITY OF SAN FERNANDO — A father and his daughter riding their tricycle on Saturday survived a direct collision with a van and lived to celebrate Father’s Day last Sunday.
Police identified the victims as Vergel Galang, 28, and his four-year-old daughter Cyrish Nicole, both from Blue Diamond Subdivision, San Vicente, Sto. Tomas.

The driver of the black Toyota Innova (RHN 148) is identified as Rey Vincent David, 23, of 219 Rizal Street, Poblacion, also in Sto. Tomas town.

Police said that around 4:45 p.m. Saturday, Galang was cruising along MacArthur Highway in Barangay Del Pilar, this city, when hit by the van.
The victims were hurled from their tricycle because of the impact and hit the concrete pavement head on.
The van sped toward Sto. Tomas, but later on came back at the Jose B. Lingad Memorial Hospital, where the victims were taken.
Police said Sun.Star Pampanga reporter Jovi De Leon and his son Patrick Joven, an aspiring priest at the Mother of Good Counsel Seminary here, rushed the victims to the hospital.
In an interview, De Leon said it was a twist of events that they took the route going to the seminary.
“From our home on our way to the seminary, my son asked me where we would pass and I told him we will take the usual route at Consunji Street. Then sabi niya ‘Di po ba matagal doon?’ So I told him we will take the other route at Gen. Hizon Avenue then MacArthur Highway. We were trailing Galang’s tricycle at about 40 kph and then we slowed down when they signaled they were turning left towards Del Pilar. Two vehicles on the other side stopped to give way to the motorcycle but the Innova suddenly overtook the vehicles and hit Galang’s tricycle. The victims flew and hit the pavement head first. The Innova swerved to the left and stopped about 20 meters from the scene but then sped off. We stopped and rushed to help the victims. The father was dazzled while the girl was unconscious. Galang wanted to chase the van but we took them to the car. There was blood all over their faces. I could hear my son asking bystanders and other witnesses to chase the van,” De Leon recounted.
He said the girl was convulsing while unconscious on the way to the hospital.
“The father was pleading to go fast. It was about three kilometers from the hospital but my son rolled down the window and told motorists it was an emergency. At the hospital’s emergency room, we were told by attending doctors na kung nagtagal pa daw for just a minute, maga-grabe na iyung bata. I also called up Superintendent Luisito Magnaye to report the accident and in minutes, elements of Compac 1 led by Inspector Reynaldo Manganti Jr. were at the hospital to investigate. Others went to the scene of the accident. A few minutes later, David and his relatives also arrived. I was told by David that he never meant to run. Nagipit daw siya doon sa isang vehicle na walang ilaw kaya nag-overtake siya and hit Galang’s tricycle. They amicably settled the case and said they would pay for all the expenses. But Cyrish Nicole had to be moved to Mother Teresa of Calcutta Hospital for further treatment and confinement,” he added.
De Leon said Galang, David and police were thankful for the assistance.
“My son and I thought that maybe it was God’s hand at work. We believe that other responsible citizens who could have been there would do the same to help save lives. It’s all in day’s work. But we are thankful of the opportunity to help and so happy when the victims told us the following day at the hospital that it was their best Father’s Day ever,” he said.
