Davao City mulls equipping rubber boats with motors

WITH the strong currents of the overflowing Matina Pangi River rendering human-powered rescue crafts nearly useless during the June 28 flash flood, the City Government is looking to equip its rubber boats with outboard motors.
Magno Adalin, chief of the Davao City’s Public Safety Command Center, said a portion of the P51.5 calamity fund recently approved by the City Council will be used to purchase motors for rescue boats.

At the height of the flash floods, rescue teams struggled to control their unpowered rubber boats because of the strong current.
Adalin said once the calamity fund will be released, they will immediately procure the motors that cost about P300,000 to P400,000 an engine.
The PSCC is eyeing at least four motorized rubber boats for future rescue.
Rising floodwaters caused Matina Pangi River to breach and overwhelm its nearby densely populated floodplains, causing death and destruction.
About 27 people are confirmed dead with 15 missing. The flood also affected 50,000 families.
The PSCC chief said that with the forecasted rainy week, the City has available standby personnel and equipment ready to assist residents in case of evacuations
