De Lima ignores Lacson’s peace offer

SENATOR Panfilo Lacson, who has criticized Justice Secretary Leila De Lima since he was subject to a manhunt last year, has offered her an olive branch, saying he could be convinced to support her at confirmation hearings at the Commission on Appointments.
“The moment she causes the issuance of arrest warrants against any of the Arroyos, then I will withdraw my objection, I might even move for her confirmation,” he told reporters Thursday.
Lacson said he has a “continuing objection” to de Lima’s confirmation, citing what he said was a lack of action on corruption cases.
But de Lima ignored the senator’s gesture, saying she will uphold the rule of law and will not file charges against the Arroyo administration “just to please certain people.”
The DOJ will file the case in court against the former President “in due time,” since all of them are still in the preliminary investigation stage and no probable cause has yet been established, she said in a separate report.
De Lima said she chose to refuse to interfere with the probe being conducted by state prosecutors to preserve her impartiality should the case reaches her desk through a petition for review.
“We will cross the bridge when we get there. Hayaan muna natin, konting tiis lang… It’s unfair to be accusing us that we’re not acting at all. It remains my duty to uphold due process and the rule of law. I won’t do it just to please certain people,” she said.
She made these remarks after Lacson also scored her for failing to file cases on a string of scandals believed to involve members of the Arroyo family.
The senator rattled off a list of scandals that happened during the Arroyo administration, including the scrapped ZTE National Broadband Network deal, jueteng, the misuse of the Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office (PCSO) fund, and allegations of race horses smuggled into the country by Pampanga Representative Juan Miguel Macapagal Arroyo.
“If you look into these cases, you will find an Arroyo underneath,” he said, adding it was frustrating that de Lima has yet to file cases 14 months into her term as Justice secretary.
Lacson said the Justice department should coordinate with the blue ribbon committee on corruption scandals it has already investigated.
“We have the documents and the evidence,” he said. “All she has been doing has been to chase after me. Even if I have already been cleared (of murder charges), she still wants to go after me and ask me about my travel documents instead of going after the big things.”
Lacson was a fugitive from the law for more than a year after he was ordered arrested over allegations that he was involved in the Dacer-Corbito murders of 2000.
He surfaced in Cebu in March after the Court of Appeals dismissed charges against him and lifted the warrant for his arrest. In June, the Supreme Court junked an appeal from the Dacer family to have the charges reinstated.
While in hiding, Lacson released a press statement twitting the DOJ.
He said de Lima and State Prosecutor Peter Ong were more interested in “winning the case at the expense of justice itself.”
“It is very unfortunate that the present DOJ and its prosecutors have become and continue to be tools for my persecution,” he added. (Jonathan de Santos/JCV/Sunnex)
