‘Fernandina Moms’ focus of nutrition month

CITY OF SAN FERNANDO — This month, “Fernandina Moms” will get more attention from the City Government as it observes Nutrition Month.
Mayor Oscar Rodriguez bared this on Monday, as the city hailed July as Nutrition Month, with the theme “Breast Feeding: Tama, Sapat, at Ekslusibo.”
Rodriguez said this year’s celebration will focus on informing Fernandina mothers on the importance and benefits of breastfeeding for infants, especially those aged six months below.
“The mortality rate of babies before they turn one year of age is 22 percent. They are those who were not breast-fed, hence did not get colostrums from their moms,” he said.
Programs to stress the importance of breastfeeding were also set by the City Government, including “A1 si Baby sa Gatas ni Mommy,” breastfeeding advocacy and pregnant women awareness and screening lectures, plus the “Healthiest Pregging Fernandina.”
The city’s first ever breastfeeding station will also be launched on July 25.
Other activities for Nutrition Month include contests like breastfeeding mobile advocacy, essay writing, baby food cooking, on-the-spot poster making, Best “Hataw Fitness Program,” Nutri jingle, DCC Dance exercise competition and a Nutri Quiz.
The nutrition council has also set a supplementary feeding program that will benefit selected pre-schoolers. Their nutrition will be strictly monitored by city health workers for 90 days.
