Foreign Affairs vows to assist OFWs employed by Gaddafi kin

MANILA (Updated 10:56 a.m.) — The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) vowed Sunday to assist four Filipino domestic workers employed by a relative of ousted Libyan President Moummar Gaddafi.
In a text message, DFA spokesman Raul Hernandez said that DFA Undersecretary Rafael Seguis was able to talk by phone to one of the overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) employed by the Gaddafi family.
“The OFW said they are safe and secure where they are now, but signified their desire to leave their employ and come back home as soon as possible,” Hernandez said.
“The [Philippine] embassy [in Tripoli] will exert all efforts to assist them in their safe release from their employer through diplomatic channels at an opportune time given the security situation the four OFWs are in,” he added.
Seguis was sent by DFA Secretary Albert del Rosario in Tripoli to convince Filipinos there to avail of the repatriation program by the Philippine government.
The DFA undersecretary left Libya on Thursday, together with one OFW who availed of the repatriation program, via a boat chartered by the International Organization for Migration (IOM).
The OFW, with Seguis and another DFA official, will arrive in Manila Monday morning via a Gulf Air commercial flight from the Cairo International Airport.
The IOM-chartered boat left the port of Tripoli where they fetched foreign nationals and then dropped them off Benghazi — an area largely controlled by Libya’s National Transitional Council (NTC) — where the foreign nationals would have to travel by land for 16 hours to the Egyptian border of Al Sallum.
In Al Sallum, officials of the Philippine embassy in Egypt met Seguis and the OFW.
The cost of the commercial flight was shouldered by the Philippine government.
Hernandez said, however, that the Philippine embassy in Tripoli “will continue assisting our OFWs who have decided to remain working in Libya.”
Around 2,000 OFWs still remain in Tripoli and its surrounding areas, he said.
“Chartering of boat will be IOM’s decision and is dependent on the number of foreign nationals who would like to leave Tripoli. Embassy will continue to assist Filipinos who would like to be repatriated back to the Philippines,” the DFA official added.

The rebels managed to overtook Tripoli — the seat of Gaddafi’s power — more than a week ago.
