Guv asks businessman for tech school, hospital

CITY OF SAN FERNANDO — Governor Lilia Pineda has asked Kapampangan businessman Manuel V. Pangilinan to establish a technical and vocational school in Pampanga that will cater to skilled students and meet in-demand jobs in the country and abroad.
A report from the Provincial Information Office said the governor urged Pangilinan to create a school that will offer “lesser fees” for poor students.
Pineda joined Pangilinan in celebrating his 65th birthday in his native town of Apalit recently.
The report said Pineda had also asked the business tycoon to establish a private hospital in the province offering efficient but affordable medical service.
“We have good hospitals in Pampanga now. But we want to have a hospital [that] will convince the many other prolific Kapampangan doctors to stay and work in province. It’s only MVP [Pangilinan] who can build a school right away and attract doctors to work in his hospital,” the report quoted the governor as saying.
Pineda said the school can also offer short-term courses to students from other provinces in Central Luzon. She added that Pangilinan assured her that he would study her proposal, the report noted.
Pineda said the tuition at the school will depend on the income of the family’s parents similar to the state schools, such as the case at the University of the Philippines and that she would support students in the planned school by giving scholarships.
The governor pointed out the need to offer vocational and technical courses needed by locators at Clark Freeport. There are at least 507 firms at the Freeport, which generated some 61,000 jobs as of last month.
