Hong Kong’s Best Asian Beach Vacations
June 21, 2011
When you think of Asian beach vacations, Hong Kong is probably one destination that doesn’t come to mind. However, with over 200 outlying islands, and a long coastline full of spectacular bays and beaches, there are more than enough beautiful beaches in Hong Kong to frolic the day away at.
While there are several beaches that you might feel belong on this list, we have carefully researched the best beaches in Hong Kong and have only included those that come with a grade of 1 or 2, based on weekly water samples collected from the Leisure and Cultural Services Department (LCSD) of Hong Kong.
To date, the LCSD has a total of forty beaches in Hong Kong. Eleven of them are located on Hong Kong Island and the southern part of the Kowloon Peninsula. The remaining 29 are located in the New Territories and include Hong Kong’s outlying islands.
Grading System
Beaches are graded according to the level of E. coli in the water of the beaches.
• Grade 1 – Excellent. No related cases of skin and gastrointestinal illnesses that have been reported by swimmers at these beaches.
• Grade 2 – Fair. 10 in 1000 swimmers have reported skin and gastrointestinal illnesses.
• Grade 3 – Poor. 11 – 15 in 1000 swimmers have reported skin and gastrointestinal illnesses.
• Grade 4 – More than 15 in 1000 swimmers have reported skin and gastrointestinal illnesses. Swimmers are advised not to swim at these beaches.
Best Beaches on Hong Kong Island
Turtle Cove Beach is situated east of Stanley and west of Tai Tam Reservoir. This Grade 1 beach is less than 70 meters long, but it is well-equipped with changing rooms, toilets and showers. There is also a small playground, a soft drinks kiosk, and seven barbecue pits. To get to Turtle Cove Beach, take bus No.14 from exit A of the Sai Wan Ho MTR station or the mini-van 16X from Chai Wan.
Shek O Beach is a beautiful beach on the southeastern end of Hong Kong Island. This fantastic little village has an excellent selection of restaurants. Lifeguards, shark nets, and changing rooms can all be found here. The water quality here is quite good. To get to Shek O, take bus number 9 from Shau Kei Wan MRT Station.
Big Wave Bay is a popular choice with the surf crowd in Hong Kong. The beach is north of Shek O Beach, and has a more rural setting. Big Wave Bay is Hong Kong’s only designated surfing beach, but there really is no comparison when taking other world-class surfing destinations into consideration.
Repulse Bay on southwest Hong Kong Island has one of the most popular beaches in Hong Kong. It isn’t the most beautiful beach, since there are so many high-rises overlooking the beach, but it is easy to get to and offers plenty of facilities.
Stanley Main Beach is probably the best-known beach in Hong Kong, but we’ve heard that the water here is mediocre at best. This small village on the south of Hong Kong Island is well-developed with excellent facilities. There are two beaches here, Stanley Main Beach and St. Stephen’s Beach. There are also a number of western style bars and restaurants lining the waterfront.
Best Beaches in the New Territories
Golden Beach has the honor of being the first artificial beach in Hong Kong and one of the few beaches in Hong Kong that boasts a volleyball court. There are several refreshment kiosks in the area, and a nearby hotel and shopping mall make this beach very convenient.
Swimmers have reported that the water quality here is quite good. To get to Golden Beach from Kwai Fong, take KMB bus number 52M. If you are coming from Tsuen Wan, get on KMB bus number 53.
Sai Kung Beach is a nice option if you want to make a day excursion to the beach. Located in the eastern part of the New Territories, this beach is a fair distance from Hong Kong Island. The water quality here is very good and there is a wide range of drinking and dining establishments to choose from.
Sai Kung Beach also draws a number of water sport enthusiasts, since the Sai Kung Sail Club is just up the road. To get to the beach, take bus number 92 from Diamond Hill MRT Station in Kowloon.
Best Beaches on Lantau Island
Hong Kong’s largest island, Lantau, has several beaches which are clean and relatively convenient to reach. For all of them, the first step is to simply take the ferry from Central to Mui Wo. Then, if necessary, one can just hop on a bus.
Silvermine Bay Beach is the easiest to get to and also has a reputation for being one of the cleanest beaches in Hong Kong. This Grade 1 beach is a 5 minute walk away from the Mui Wo ferry pier.
This beach is an excellent family beach. The water quality is very good, and there is a swimming area here with several lifeguards on duty. Bicycles can also be rented here, and there are a number of refreshment stands and restaurants in the area as well.
The Silvermine Beach Hotel, located right on the waterfront, is an excellent option for those looking for a weekend getaway. There are several other hotels and guesthouses in the area as well. To get to Silvermine Bay Beach, take the ferry from Central Pier to Lantau Island.
Cheung Sha on southern Lantau has two beautiful beaches. Both Upper Cheung Sha and Lower Cheung Sha are popular with surfers and should be avoided during monsoon season. Both beaches offer lifeguard services and changing facilities.
Tong Fuk is a one of the most popular recreational destinations in Hong Kong. The beach is a famous local attraction, where tourists can rent village houses to relax and enjoy the beautiful natural scenery.
Beaches on Cheung Chau
In Cheung Chau, two beaches along the eastern coastline, Tung Wan Beach and Kwun Yam Wan Beach, are thought to be quite good. Both beaches are classified as Grade 1 beaches. Kwun Yam Beach is a beautiful fine white beach with water sports facilities.
Po Yue Wan, also known as Italian Beach, is on the southwestern end of the island. It doesn’t have many facilities, but it is quiet and peaceful compared to other beaches in Cheung Chau.
Best Beaches on Lamma Island
Author’s note: There is no public transportation on Lamma Island.
Lo So Shing Beach is about halfway between the main villages of Yung Shue Wan and Sok Kwu Wan. This beautiful Grade 1 beach is clean and well-equipped with showers and refreshment facilities. Because of its remote location and a lack of public transportation, Lo So Shing Beach is a good option if you’re looking for a beach that doesn’t host hordes of sun-worshippers.
To get there, take the ferry from Central Pier and travel to Yung Shue Wan or Sok Kwu Wan. Look for signposts to guide you on your way to the beach. The walk is about 40 minutes.
Hung Shing Yeh Beach is the most popular beach on Lamma Island. This Grade 1 beach boasts fine, powdery sand and clear water. The beach is well-equipped with changing facilities, a refreshment kiosk, and a barbecue area.
To get there, take the ferry from Central Pier and travel to Yung Shue Wan. Look for signposts on your way to the beach. The walk is about 20 minutes.
To sum up, although the beaches in Hong Kong might not be rated among the best beaches in Asia, they are still a wonderful escape from the hustle-bustle streets of busy Hong Kong.
