Jobless nurses urged to apply in clinics, spas

LABOR Secretary Rosalinda Baldoz on Sunday urged unemployed Nursing Licensure Examination passers to consider working in other health-related opportunities for the meantime, with the oversupply of nursing graduates in the country.
Baldoz said there is also a range of opportunities presented to nursing graduates aside from working in hospitals.
“With the continuous glut of registered, yet, unemployed nurses, alongside with the recent developments highlighted by nurse-volunteerism in hospitals and institutions, I encourage students and workers to look at other healthcare professions if they want to get employed quickly,” she said.
Among them, she said, are in the fields of optometry, physical therapy, pharmacy, medical technology, clinical and internal medicine, surgery, and radiology.
Also included in the so-called in-demand skills are wellness massage or hilot, and spa/massage therapy.
“These kinds of careers are in-demand not only in hospitals, but also in laboratories, clinics, health maintenance organizations, public health agencies, pharmaceutical firms, research institutions, scientific equipment companies, physicians’ offices, and schools offering clinical laboratory science programs. Indeed, their (nursing) licenses can bring them to greater heights and greener pastures,” Baldoz stressed.
The labor and employment chief said proof of these demands is that the health and wellness industry has been identified by the Department of Labor and Employment’s (Dole) Project JobsFit as one of the 12 key employment generators (KEGs) that will provide more employment opportunities in the country.
Baldoz’s statement came amid reports that at least 287,000 previous nursing board passers remain underemployed, based on data from the Professional Regulatory Commission (PRC).
It also came amid the passing of some 37,513 examiners in the July 2011 nursing board exams.
In a related development, the Trade Union Congress of the Philippines (TUCP) urged incoming college students to stay out of “heavily oversubscribed” courses if they want to increase their chances of obtaining gainful employment after graduation.
TUCP Secretary-General Ernesto Herrera said there are at least five extremely oversubscribed programs in the country, namely: teacher education, nursing, business administration, information-technology, and hotel and restaurant management.
“We’re afraid the huge oversupply of graduates of these programs has made it exceptionally difficult for them to sell their skills to employers,” said the former senator.
Herrera then advised fresh high school graduates and college students, who could still shift courses, to instead consider going into the sector of science and technology, as well as agriculture and fisheries.
