Lacson bares companies believed used for money laundering

SENATOR Panfilo Lacson is coordinating with the Anti-Money Laundering Council to have two companies incorporated in the British Virgin Islands investigated on the suspicion that they were used to sneak money out of the Philippines.
In an interview Wednesday, Lacson said he has documents to show that Hong Kong-based Jetstream Pacific Ltd International and Mainlands Global Ltd received remittances from the Philippines in the millions of dollars. He said the corporations were founded, registered, and later dissolved at the same time.
“So, apparently the corporations were formed just to receive remittances. And after they served their purpose, they were shut down,” he said. Lacson said he has records of remittances, with some transactions amounting to $1 million and $849,000. “The amounts were large, I did not get to compute (the total),” he added.
“Obviously, the two corporations had no other purpose than to receive remittances from the Philippines,” he said.
Lacson said he already has a name of the person who incorporated the companies, but said that it would be difficult to find out who else was part of the two companies.
“If they were based here, it would be easy to get the information. But there, even just one person can register a corporation,” he explained.
He said he noticed the two corporations because they operated from
2001 to 2004, “when the Piatco anomaly was hot.”
He was referring to the Philippine International Airport Terminals Co. Inc., the consortium that built Terminal 3 of the Ninoy Aquino International Airport. Their contract with the government was declared irregular by the Arroyo administration in 2002, and by the Supreme Court in 2003. The government took over the terminal but not before it paid Piatco more than P3 billion as ordered by the Supreme Court in 2005.
He said the transactions may be related to the Piatco deal.
Lacson said he did not know where the money went after it was transferred to Hong Kong. “That’s what the AMLC has to find out,” he said. (Jonathan de Santos/Sunnex)
