Lawmaker: City flooding can be solved
July 4, 2011
CITY OF SAN FERNANDO — Third District Representative Aurelio Gonzales Jr. on Sunday said flooding in this capital can solved with a comprehensive flood mitigation program particularly along the stretch of the Jose Abad Santos Avenue (Jasa).
Gonzales made this remarks after starting a new round of talks with the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) at his home in Barangay Dolores.
“We have started talks on how to address the flooding problem. And we are now identifying short-term and permanent solutions to the flooding problem along Jasa,” Gonzales said.
He added that an effecting intervention plan can mitigate and ultimately solve flooding in the area. Jasa is the province’s gateway to Central Luzon.
The meeting was attended by DPWH Regional Director Antonio Molano Jr. and his staff.
To recall canals along the city’s so-called Ayala Avenue and the creek have been discovered strewn with tons of garbage and heavily silted, causing floods during heavy downpours.
Gonzales, a licensed civil engineer by profession, said an effective drainage system and study of the water flow during the rainy season in the area are just few of the things being considered to eliminate flooding in the area.

The congressman also bared that some P25 million from the P67 million for development programs for the whole stretch of Jasa has been allocated.
“I have coordinated with the DPWH on the upcoming programs to better improve also the traffic and safety conditions along the Jasa section in this city,” Gonzales said, adding that the highway will be much conducive for travel once the projects are implemented.
The Jasa stretch is a national highway and is maintained through funds from the National Government.
Gonzales said he is taking seriously the situation along Jasa as the highway falls directly within his program jurisdiction.
Among the projects for the Jasa stretch is the construction of a pedestrian overpass in front of the MELVI building, stretching across the highway to McDonalds. Asphalting and installation of traffic lights are set to be implemented within the coming weeks, said Gonzales.
