Limlingan: A Worthy Endeavor
February 25, 2011
IT’S been quite a long while, 20 long years as a matter of fact when the long-time dormant Mt. Pinatubo threw ashes in the air that clouded a number of provinces in the region.
On June 1991, it seemed that the end of the world was at hand. Never in a couple of generations that we had experienced such a frightening phenomenon when ash, sand and rocks fell from a dark sky. We felt tremors once in awhile, shaking not only the earth but even our nerves and knees.
There are a lot of stories to tell about Pinatubo. As a matter of fact, some of life’s tales in that eruption and even after it were made into pieces of essays and other writings. Chronicles of the Pinatubo were made masterpieces of local and national writers and journalists.
It’s been a while, yet the experience of having a taste of nature’s wrath would never be forgotten. The eruption’s collateral damage like floods, silted waterways, unproductive land may be far from over but we cannot just leave behind an angry Mt. Pinatubo that was.
Stories of Mt. Pinatubo did not end after its eruption. Many years after 1991 came a lot of collateral happenings and mis-happenings. Lahar flowed yearly during the rainy season. Rivers and other tributaries became silted with volcanic materials. Flooding was perennial.
It’s just proper that we rekindle and commemorate things of the past, along with it people’s experiences — good or bad.
Local officials of Pampanga, a province that was truly devastated by the eruption, have joined together to commemorate one of the most damaging volcanic eruptions of the century. The provincial government, under the leadership of the hardworking Governor Lilia “Nanay Baby” Pineda together with City Mayors Oscar Rodriguez and Edgardo Pamintuan of the cities of San Fernando and Angeles, Mayor Jerry Pelayo of Candaba, the Center for Kapampangan Studies and the Pampanga Chamber of Commerce and Industry have joined hands in coming up with the events and activities for the commemoration.
The said local officials, in partnership with the private sector, are to work out plans for the said major event that touched the lives of Kapampangans and taken some of them 20 years ago. They will spearhead the recalling of the memories of the said calamity.
The partnership of the said local officials and private groups is laudable, uniting efforts for a common goal of documenting and immortalizing what Mt. Pinatubo has done to Pampanga.
I recall the words of the late former Pampanga Governor Bren Guiao, who in full spirit said that the province will bounce back and will rise from the ashes. Indeed, after the devastation, Pampanga has bounced back and made the province what it is now in terms of development and progress.
We may have suffered the loss of lives and properties then, but we have proven our resilience in every disaster. The millions of tons of sand and ashes became Pampanga’s gold mine. Industries are on their feet now. Agriculture flourished. Commerce and trade bloomed. Lowlands became high.
Mt. Pinatubo’s crater, by the way, is now a tourism spot. I have not visited yet the place but promised myself to be there one time. Many tourists, foreign or local, have been there and saw the majesty of the caldera.
The plan of commemorating the eruption of Mt. Pinatubo is a worthy endeavor not only for historians and men of sciences but to all Kapampangans as well. Our experiences of it can never be forgotten.
I am sure every member of the generation during the Mt. Pinatubo years has their own stories to tell. Those who have survived have proven their worth to live, and be back to the mainstream of moving on.
