Lubao waste-to-energy project set in motion

CITY of SAN FERNANDO — Governor Lilia Pineda and Lubao Mayor Mylyn Pineda-Cayabyab on Wednesday signed a memorandum of agreement with the Pampanga Green Management Inc. (PGMI) and the MacKay Green Energy Inc. for the setting up of a facility that will convert the province’s garbage into electricity.
The project, funded by the PGMI with the technology provided by MacKay Green Energy Inc., is seen as the best solution to the garbage problem in the province.
Under the project, the facility will process 800 metric tons of garbage a day and will generate 22 megawatts of electricity.
MacKay Green Energy Inc. said the project produces no gases or subsidiary wastes that may be harmful to people.
The group said the technologies for the combustion turbines they use are eco-friendly.
“With our system, there will be no longer any need for landfills. With our facility you can be guaranteed to be safe from any leachate, which is very hazardous. Methane issues will no longer be a problem,” the company said.
The MacKay Green Energy Inc. will also embark on welfare programs such as livelihood projects.
Beneficial for Lubao
Pineda said the local government and the province will benefit a lot from the program.
As counterpart support, the Municipality of Lubao will allow the use of a portion of the land of the central materials recovery facility in Barangay Sta. Catalina in Lubao town.
Pineda said that the group will be using an initial portion of the land for the construction of their facilities.
“This will also help us in turn with the electricity they will produce since the municipality will have income from the energy sold to power distributors here,” Pineda said.
Pineda said the problem in garbage disposal will no longer become a big problem for municipalities as it would be turned into energy.
At least one megawatt produced by the energy facility can supply the power needs of an average of 5,000 homes. Pineda said the project will greatly provide employment opportunities for residents of the town.
Pineda said the goal of MacKay Green Energy Inc. is to present the Pampanga site as its flagship project and eventually make the country the springboard to supply its technology in Asia. (Ian Ocampo Flora)
