Mayor, bishop share insights on Aquino’s 1st year
July 1, 2011
CITY OF SAN FERNANDO — League of Cities of the Philippines president and this city’s Mayor Oscar Rodriguez and Archbishop Paciano Aniceto on Thursday shared their insights and respective “assessment” of President Benigno Aquino III’s first year in office.
Aniceto was facilitating a peace and order meeting at the Arsobizpado (Chancery) de Pampanga with government officials and police, which Rodriguez attended before proceeding to Malacañang before noon.
I would have to listen to reports [from the President] as LCP president. What is important to me is how committed and serious is the President in good governance. There is no question about that and he is our hope when it comes to that,” he told Sun.Star Pampanga.
The one-year assessment of the President’s performance had surely been collated. In terms of ratings that have come out, I think that is natural. I never heard of any president here or even in the US whose exemplary rating has decreased. What is important is majority of our people still believed in him [Aquino] at this stage,” he said.
“It has just been one year and we know that if you are new in a post, there is so much to learn, adjust, and look into as to who will be there with you na qualified, committed at maaasahan (dependable) with similar principles. It will take a little time. Personally, like savings now at DPWH of P7 million na hindi napunta sa wala ay malaking bagay para sa akin (that was never put to waste is already a big thing),” Rodriguez added.
Aniceto, for his part, said, “the President, in my personal view, is trying his best to lead the country with his tremendous moral and political capital. But it is too early to pinpoint his major accomplishments although he took the right direction in fighting graft and corruption. That is very important because it is the first problem to be solved to restore the government’s credibility and stability.”
“The President, I think, should consult leaders knowledgeable in moral, cultural and religious dimensions of man like the Reproductive Health Bill. This is one aspect, which could help the President if he consults the right leaders with fair and deep insights on such problems,” he said.
“I hope and pray that he pushes more for the moral and religious capital like his parents Senator Ninoy and President Cory. This includes the cultural and spiritual reservoir. In his next two years, sana ay iyon ang kanyang itulak (I hope that he will push for it),” Aniceto added. (Jovi T. De Leon)
