Mercado: Saving Among Ed
January 12, 2011
PAMPANGOS are urging – and even anticipating – President Aquino’s initiative to hire former Governor Ed Panlilio who desires to serve the new administration.
In May, the one-year ban on political appointments covering past candidates expires. It is the hope of our cabalen that Among Ed may join – and be given the opportunity to serve – the Aquino regime.
We do not want to second-guess President Noy’s possible choice of job for the priest-turned-politician. Panlilio was the foremost Pampango campaigner for P-Noy in Pampanga, next to San Fernando City Mayor Oscar Rodriquez.
When almost all Kapampangan politicians of consequence were campaigning for Gibo Teodoro or Manny Villar, Among Ed preached the Aquino gospel on his lonesome.
He did this under severe financial constraint, as his party (Liberal) extended him little funding assistance, if any.
At the later stage of the campaign when the opinion polls and surveys put him far behind the leading candidate, Nanay Baby, Panlilio accepted the fact of a lost battle. He then went all-out and in full speed to help Noynoy’s election.
It was an unintended investment which now promises a reward during harvest time.
This corner today is batting for Among Ed’s logical placement in government service, not as a matter of compensation but to help salvage his overweening but frustrated passion to serve as a model public servant.
He cannot be a prophet in his country. It appears that his talent and his temper, while not misplaced, are out of sync in his own province. He had been rejected in his reelection bid, a proof of incongruence if not anachronism.
The best person who can approach and persuade the President to place Panlilio in government is his friend and sympathizer, Mayor Oca. Oca has P-Noy’s ears, being a tested and trusted loyalist to the latter.
Immediately after the May polls, suggestions from various sectors flooded the local media on the possible position the former governor may aspire for in the Aquino administration.
If he has something definite in mind, Among Ed has not talked about it. Rumors abound, and one of these said Panlilio prefers to be a board member of the Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office and concurrently director in charge of the Small Town Lottery (STL).
I myself would like to see him appointed as Chaplain of the Armed Forces of the Philippines. I was told Among Ed cannot distinguish an M-14 rifle from an M-16, which is ground enough to disqualify him. His chief liability, I was told, was Among Ed’s proclivity for wearing sandals. This might bring him an attitude problem in an organization that requires combat boots for daily wear.
Being out of work – both as a rejected “returnee” to his priesthood and because of the one-year ban on government appointments – I am afraid Among Ed might take the only career option available.
Out of desperation and in blind disregard to reality, he may decide anew to fight Governor Pineda. That, I would not advice Among Ed even in my vilest mood. I do not like him to repeat history and worse, degenerate into a suspect nuisance candidate.
I do not know which is calamitous – his being mistaken for a nuisance candidate if he runs, or if he gets married. The last is the standing advice and fearless prophesy of Doña Lolita Hizon, the priest’s best friend-turned-worst enemy.
Among Ed has forgiven Doña Lolita even as the feisty philanthropist has forgiven him. While he eats breakfast sausages and tocino, his cook at Domus Mariae where he resides, has been under strict instructions on specified brands.
While he is volatile and headstrong he is also predictable in his choices. He sticks to his denim jeans, goes around in his patented sandals and keeps reliable company like Atty. Vivian and Dennis Simpao.
As he looks with regret at the Capitol on his way to Betis, the jobless priest seemed to long for and cherish his lost Camelot.
