Mindanao senator asked to resign

A MINORITY party has called on Senator Juan Miguel Zubiri to resign after allegations of cheating in the 2007 elections that reportedly favored the senator emerged last week.
PDP-Laban “strongly and unanimously” called on Zubiri to step down and let its party president, Aquilino Pimentel III, take over.
Zubiri edged Pimentel out of the 12th slot in the 2007 senatorial elections. He has contested that victory and his party says “the poll fraud has been confirmed by no less than the doers themselves.”
Last week, massacre suspect and former Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (Armm) governor Zaldy Ampatuan said that then President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo met with his clan to arrange the poll cheating.
Also last week, Lintang Bedol, former election supervisor for Maguindanao, said election returns for the province were faked, adding votes for candidates then senator Benigno Aquino III, Alan Peter Cayetano, and Panfilo Lacson were shaved and credited to Zubiri.
“Zubiri has been sitting in a six-year Senate term for already four years now,” the party said.
Zubiri held a press conference last Thursday to deny any involvement in poll fraud. He said he never had to cheat in previous elections when he ran for Bukidnon representative.
“I did not cheat in the 2007 elections. I will never cheat in any elections,” he said, adding his camp conceded the votes in Maguindanao long ago. He said he did that because he did not want to benefit from tainted votes.
He said he was also a victim of cheating and that votes for him in Metro Manila had been credited to candidates of the opposition bloc.
Zubiri filed a counter-protest, saying around 211,403 more votes should have been counted in his favor.
Zubiri was a member of Arroyo’s Lakas-Kampi-CMD but has since left the party.
Pimentel, on the other hand, is from PDP-Laban, which has three seats at the House of Representatives and has Vice President Jejomar Binay as its chairman. (Jonathan de Santos/Sunnex)
