Modest financial aid awaits OFWs from Syria

A MODEST financial assistance package awaits Filipino workers returning from Syria, the government said on Wednesday.
Household service workers are set to receive financial grants worth P10,000 from the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (Owwa), the agency said.
The benefit is also extended to those who are not members of the Owwa, Carmelita Dimzon, Owwa administrator, said in a phone interview.
“Sakop na lahat (including non-Owwa members). Binibigyan na natin ng pagkakataon as part of our reintegration program. Ito yung Balik-Pinay, Balik-Hanapbuhay program,” said Dimzon.
Besides cash, the government is also expected to provide options for redeployment, skills upgrade or retooling, and local employment opportunities or livelihood assistance.
Majority of the 17,000 OFWs in Syria are employed as household help. About 90 percent of them are non-documented and neither are Owwa members.
On Tuesday, the Philippine government raised the crisis alert level in that country to 3, prompting the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) to call for Filipinos’ voluntary repatriation.
Dimzon asked OFWs in Syria to begin registering their names and locations to the Philippine Overseas Labor Office (Polo) as soon as possible.
Meanwhile, advocacy group Migrante-Middle East asked Polo officials to begin brining home some 100 workers that are already at the Filipino Workers Resource Center even before hostilities broke out in Syria.
“Many of them have been staying for three to six months, others a year already, at the FWRC and since then have been requesting for their repatriation,” the labor leader said.
Most of these OFWs were runaways from their abusive employers. (AMN/Sunnex)
