Ninoy’s nephew: We’re staying out of Aquino’s way

CITY OF SAN FERNANDO — Martyred Senator Benigno “Ninoy” Aquino’s nephew Paulo Benigno “Bam” Aquino IV said recently that he and his family, along with relatives, are staying out of President Benigno Aquino III’s way in governing the country to dispel reports about the clan’s influence.
During the commemorative rites for the late senator’s 28th death anniversary, Aquino IV said he and his family would rather focus on their own efforts for development of Filipinos.
“We are good relatives staying out of PNoy’s way. We are good relatives. We understand. We would rather focus on our own programs like helping small entrepreneurs,” Aquino IV told Sun.Star Pampanga in an exclusive interview.
Aquino IV, who is described by many, including Mayor Oscar Rodriguez as the next “Ninoy” with his framed glasses, said that exactly the same date 50 years thereafter, he received the same Ten Outstanding Young Men Award his uncle received when he was governor of Tarlac.
“It’s something when you think about it. Well, for now, politics is out of my mind,” said the Aquino scion, who is also known as a media man and advocate of youth development.
He clarified that Ninoy’s hunger strike when he was imprisoned lasted 52 days, but was declared 40 to give it Biblical significance.
“That’s how my uncle was. I hope that everything he did for this country will be our light, as we live not in his shadows, but before him for Filipinos,” Aquino IV said. (Jovi T. De Leon)
