No need for Peace Covenant in Arayat – Mayor

January 26, 2011
ARAYAT – Mayor Luis Espino on Tuesday branded the proposed Peace Covenant being initiated by the Philippine Army’s 703rd Infantry Battalion as “untimely”, saying that local leaders here remain united.
Espino made the reaction to a news story published in this paper last Sunday, quoting Col. Gregorio Pio Catapang, Commander of the 703rd IB as saying that preparatory talks are on the way for a peace covenant between municipal leaders, barangay leaders and some armed groups here.

Espino, Vice Mayor Larry Trinidad and barangay chairmen here had a peace and order consultation (meeting) to discuss various concerns in their areas.
He also urged the PA to intensify its campaign against armed groups and criminal elements believed to be in the area in order to achieve peace and order.
Espino also reacted to a statement from an “unidentified” businessman claiming that there is a peace and order problem in the town.
The mayor cited several business establishments in the area that have been operating for years, saying that traders and companies are very much welcome to invest and do business in the municipality.
We are a business-friendly town.
Meanwhile, Vice Mayor Larry Trinidad said the Municipal Council is very much supportive on the plans and programs of the executive, saying a lot of projects were funded thru local legislation and some thru outside sources.
(Chris Navarro)
