Only 31 Pinoys left Libya

LESS than half of the total number of Filipinos planning to leave Libya have left the country, the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) said.
Only 35 of the 91 Filipinos have left Tripoli, the country’s capital that has recently become the battlefield between rebels and loyalists of strongman Muammar Gaddafi.
The first batch of 35 Filipinos are on their way back to Manila on a boat chartered by International Organization for Migration (IOM), DFA spokesperson Raul Hernandez said in a text message.
The vessel left “the port of Tripoli to Benghazi, where they will disembark and proceed by land to Egypt for repatriation to Manila,” said Hernandez.
Fifty-six other Filipinos who have sought repatriation may be part of the second batch.
“Some Filipinos from other workplaces could not be brought to the port because of heavy fighting in the streets of Tripoli. The Embassy team will try to fetch them tomorrow for a second boat trip,” said Hernandez.
Forces of the rebel National Transitional Council (NTC) were able to overrun Gaddafi’s headquarters in Tripoli, an event that may mark the end of his 42-year rule.
Gaddafi remains at large while his loyalists in scattered pockets of the city try to fend off rebel forces despite a $2 million bounty for his capture.
In February, 10,000 Filipinos in Libya have returned home after the foreign affairs department ordered the repatriation of 26,000 Filipinos in the country.
Another 14,000 are already in nearby countries while some 1,600 Filipinos still in various parts of Libya. (AMN/Sunnex)
