Palace sees easing tension over disputed islands
Sunday, July 10 2011
WITH the joint statement of the Philippine and Chinese government concerning maritime disputes, the Palace said it is “hopeful that it will ease tension because it’s already a sensitive issue as it is”.
On Friday, the Department of Foreign Affairs said that the recent visit Secretary of Foreign Affairs Albert del Rosario to the People’s Republic of China earlier this week resulted in positive agreements.
“Both Ministers exchanged views on the maritime disputes and agreed not to let the maritime disputes affect the broader picture of friendship and cooperation between the two countries. The two sides reaffirmed their commitments to respect and abide by the Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the South China Sea (referred to as the West Philippine Sea by Philippines) signed by China and the Asean member countries in 2002,” the statement released by both governments read.
The Philippine government had accused China of intruding into its territorial waters after recent events that have indicated the latter’s “bullying” in the disputed islands.
“That’s certainly a good development. Katulad ng sabi ni Secretary Del Rosario, we should not let one issue get in the way of our broader good relations with China,” Deputy presidential spokesperson Abigail Valte said Saturday.
“It echoes our position that despite nagkakaroon ng hindi pagkakaintindihan sa Kalayaan Group of Islands, committed lahat ng claimants to have a peaceful solution and to work it out diplomatically and it is important to have peace and stability in that region,” Valte added.
President Benigno Aquino III is expected to hold a state visit in China but details are still being worked out, the Palace said.
Philippines and China also agreed to continue to enhance trade and investments and pursue cooperation in science and technology, agriculture and fisheries, food safety, human health, infrastructure and transportation.
Representatives from both countries furthermore discussed China’s possible participation in the Philippine’s Public-Private Partnership projects. (Kathrina Alvarez/Sunnex)
