Pampanga lanterns light up Philippine Embassy in Thailand

Tuesday, December 14, 2010

CITY OF SAN FERNANDO — Some 100 “Parul Sampernandu” (Fernandino lanterns) are lighting up and “shining” at the Philippine Embassy in Bangkok, Thailand.

The lanterns, made of handmade paper and fiberglass were hanged on Acacia and Mango trees around the embassy grounds and were officially lit during the lighting ceremonies on December 9.

The lanterns were personally brought there by Mayor Oscar Rodriguez, City Administrator Ferdinand Caylao and City Tourism Officer Ching Pangilinan.

According to Pangilinan, traffic jams resulted from the lanterns’ dry run and lighting.

“Note that the Philippine Embassy is located at Sukhomvit Road Soi Philippines, having a street name of its own. Within the neighborhood are five-star hotels and the embassy occupies about 8,000 square meters. Embassy people told us when they tested the lanterns in a dry run that it created traffic at Sukhomvit road,” Pangilinan said.

During the lighting ceremony, Ambassador Linglingay Lacanlale, who was also instrumental in bringing the lanterns to Vienna and Salzburg in 2007, emphasized the “parol” as the symbol of Filipino Christmas and that the City of San Fernando is the home of the most famous and colorful lanterns in the country, Pangilinan added.

Rodriguez, Lacanlale, Filipino community leader Dennis Manalili of Porac and Marie Garces, country manager of Philippine Airlines in Thailand, led the lighting ceremony.

The event was attended by 14 ambassadors, including the Papal Nuncio, ambassadors of Cambodia, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, among others, plus leaders of the seven Filipino organizations there, members of the Thai parliament and friends of the embassy.

Pangilinan said that when the lanterns were lit up, the crowd was mesmerized and exclaimed, “How beautiful!”

“Pinoy expats felt nostalgic about it. How you don’t really get to fully appreciate the parol until you are in a foreign land. Sabi nga ni Ambassador Lacanlale, iba talaga ang pasko sa Pilipinas!” Pangilinan concluded. (Jovi T. De Leon )
