Poisoned rivers poison China

Concerns over metal pollution in China surfaced again following reports of a girl’s death caused by heavy mental pollution in Hunan, China.
Liu Gui’an’s 7-year-old daughter died two years after being diagnosed with cadmium poisoning. She was buried just 100 meters from the Xiangjiang River believed to be the main source of the heavy metal that killed her.
Liu, a former farmer, believed that the Longteng Electroplating Factory was the chief culprit in his daughter’s death. A local court ruled the factory pay a fine of $6,000 yuan (US$924) in compensation to Liu, who refused to accept the ruling and is now considering taking the case to Beijing.
In addition to the girl, some 150 villagers have been poisoned by cadmium. Their story horrified the nation when it was exposed in 2006.
The 850-kilometer long Xiangjiang River is Hunan’s longest river, supporting 60 percent of the province’s population and 70 percent of the water used in its industrial processes. Once the fertile plains along the River helped feed the province, but now much of the land has been rendered barren due to the concentration of heavy metals, farm chemicals and human waste. It is now known to be one of the country’s most polluted rivers.
The Global Times also reported that farmers were disqualified from compensation when the ban on farming came into affect. Only farmers whose land and homes were within 500 meters of the River are eligible for an annual stipend of 500 yuan per mu (one 15th of a hectare). Its research and interviews show that not much has changed in Xinma village since the poisoning case reached a wider audience over a decade ago.
Some residents still choose to plant crops in the contaminated soil to feed their families. In the mean time, they have to buy water for drinking and cooking.
China’s central government reportedly was moved to action when the predicament of the people in Xinma came to light. This year the State Council pledged to allocate $59.5 billion yuan (US$9.16 billion) over the next 10 years to tackle pollution along the River through its first state-level comprehensive plan.
As much as ten percent of China’s rice may be tainted by cadmium, according to a study by Nanjing Agricultural University.
The Ministry of Land and Resources indicated in February that millions of acres of agricultural land and more than 12 million tons of grain are contaminated by toxic metals annually.
The International Herald Tribune even reported that 90 percent of the soil in China is polluted with heavy metals according to the estimations of experts.
Much of the blame comes from China’s mining industry and its less-than-cautious development during the 1980s, especially in the southern provinces in China. Turning a blind eye to the environmental inflictions in exchange for the industry’s rapid exploitation of resources has caused huge environmental damage to some of China’s provinces.
