Regional landfill to solve garbage woes

CITY OF SAN FERNANDO — The establishment of a sanitary landfill will solve the growing garbage woes of the government, Governor Lilia Pineda said during a recent meeting with concerned department heads.
In an exclusive interview with Sun.Star Pampanga, she said establishing a regional sanitary landfill with a proper material recovery facility will help solve not only Pampanga’s waste disposal problems, but those of nearby provinces as well.
“It will actually be up to the National Government through the Department of Environment and Natural Resources. Sila dapat doon, eh. Ang proposal namin ay ibawas na lang sa IRA [internal revenue allotments] ng mga LGUs [local government units],” the governor said.
“Kasi hindi kaya ng LGUs, eh. Kailangan magsama-sama. Pag nandoon na iyung landfill, iyung kaya nila sa pondo nila binabawas na lang sa IRA nila. Wala ng tipping fee at tapon na lang sila ng tapon based kung magkano iyung regular nilang binabayaran monthly. Ibabawas na lang iyun doon sa five percent sa IRA nila annually para sa solid waste management na dapat nakalaan doon,” said Pineda.
Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Office chief Art Punsalan agreed with the governor and said that such move to identify a regional site for the facility is very doable.
“The proposal will have to pass through the Regional Development Council. But anyway, you look at it, it is very doable given resources. This is the long-term solution we have been discussing. We will fully support the idea to once and for all solve our problems in solid waste management,” said Punsalan.
