SUBIC BAY FREEPORT — Delegates from South Africa’s Richards Bay Industrial Development Zone (RBDIZ) have expressed enthusiasm in forging a cooperation agreement between the South African port and the Subic Bay Freeport Zone.
The port officials were accompanied in their trip to Subic Bay last week by South Africa’s Ambassador to the Philippines Agnes Nyamande-Pitso, who was already on her second visit here.
The RBDIZ delegation was composed of Ike Nxedlana, chief executive officer; Zenele Zeka, executive manager; Mohlomi Nikopan, chief financial officer; Hugo Lambrechts, counselor; and Keith Harvey, legal adviser and secretary.
The group also visited the Clark Freeport in Pampanga, before touring the Subic Bay Freeport Zone.
In Subic, the RBDIZ group was welcomed by incoming Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority (SBMA) chairman Roberto Garcia and outgoing chairman Feliciano Salonga.
They also received a briefing on Subic from Stefani Saño, SBMA senior deputy administrator for business development; Engineer Marcelino Sanqui, SBMA deputy administrator for public works and technical services; lawyer Redentor Tuazon, officer in charge and senior deputy administrator for aviation and maritime operations; Kenneth Rementilla, manager of the SBMA Business and Development Office; and Ruel John Kabigting, manager of the SBMA Planning and Development Office.
During the meeting with SBMA officials, the South African visitors noted the new development in Subic and inquired on the tax incentives here, which they found to be similar to those given at Richards Bay.
They also took notice of the strict implementation of traffic rules inside the free port, a clear indication of Subic’s discipline.
They added that the similarities between Subic and Richards Bay could be the foundation for close working relationship between the two ports.
“We are looking at the situation where our zone can join forces with Clark and Subic, so that we can share experiences, because we really like working with you,” said Ike Nxedlana, chief executive officer of RBDIZ.
Nxedlana said they are going to inform South African leaders of their intention to establish a formal memorandum of understanding between Subic and Richards Bay.
RBDIZ is a purpose-built and secure industrial estate located in the northeastern South African coast. The zone is linked to the international port of Richards Bay, considered as the gateway to South Africa and host of the two largest and busiest ports in the region.
