Storm could postpone PHL vs Kuwait match
Thursday, July 28, 2011
MANILA – It’s wet, windy and cold in Manila and that’s just how Philippine football coach Hans Michael Weiss wants it.
“I won’t mind a bit of rain tomorrow (today),” Weiss said during the pre-match conference, a day before the second leg of the Philippines vs. Kuwait Fifa World Cup qualifiers blasts off at the Rizal Memorial Stadium. However, if it rains too hard tonight in Manila, which was under storm signal no. 1, the match commissioner will decide on game time if the field is playable or if the match will have to be postponed for 24 hours.
The first leg, played under a 44 degree weather despite the night game, resulted to a 3-0 win by Kuwait, which only needs a draw to advance to the third round.
However, Kuwaiti coach Goran Tefudzic was quick to dismiss the advantage the home team has over the weather.
“It rains two to three months in Kuwait and these are professional players and they can adjust,” he said.
The Philippines trails the visitors by three goals and needs to win by four today to keep their dreams of advancing to the Fifa World Cup qualifiers. A draw or even a 2-0 win will result to Kuwait advancing.
“We were a bit unlucky in the first leg and Kuwait had a superb second half. We had two great chances and we conceded the three goals because we were a bit naïve,” Weiss said. “The third goal happened because we were a bit tired.
Aside from holding the advantage by winning the first leg, the Kuwaitis hold the edge in skills and experience, while the Azkals will hold the advantage of playing at home, where they haven’t lost for eight games since 2006.
However, despite facing a team that hasn’t lost in eight games, Weiss said the team’s morale is high.
“It’s good to be back home again after such a long time and we are expecting a different match,” Weiss said. “The morale of the team is always the same. They have a high spirit.”
After sitting out the first leg due to yellow cards against Sri Lanka, team captain Alexander Borromeo and Stephen Shrock will be back on the team and Weiss is hopeful the presence of the two will help counter the Kuwait’s vast advantage.
“Stephen is a pro-active player and he’s always going for the balls. He’s very helpful in the transition from defense to offense,” said Weiss.
As for Borromeo, Weiss said his presence on defense will be a big boost.
“He is the captain of the team and is very solid in defense,” said Weiss.
Borromeo, the team captain who last sat out a PHL match when he got injured in the 2008 Suzuki Cup Championship round, admitted it was tough watching the first leg from the stand.
“But I did my homework. I took some notes and was able to spot some of things that we can use,” Borromeo said.
Though Angel Aldeguer got pulled out due to cramps in the first leg, Weiss also said all the players should be well in time for the kick-off.
Meanwhile, it’s not only the Filipino media whose covering today’s game. Ricky Olivares of the PFF Media Bureau said mediamen from Kuwait, Japan and Spain are coming over to cover the match.
