Subic celebrates Feast of San Roque with ‘flavor’

SUBIC BAY FREEPORT — Colorful costumes “ala Broadway” took centerstage during the Feast of San Roque here recently.
“Viva San Roque, ala Broadway” was theme for this year’s celebration.
The feast day of San Roque, the first patron saint of Olongapo, has become a form of thanksgiving for the continuing economic progress at the Subic Bay Freeport Zone.
Father Audie Mozo, parish priest of San Roque, said the yearly celebration is lively as they give thanks to the year that was.
“So everybody is happy,” Father Mozo said.
He added that the celebration is organized by the tourism department of the Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority.
“As you can see, SBMA departments and other school joined the parade,” he added.
Mozo added, “It’s like Subic’s and San Roque’s fiesta rolled into one.”
The festival has drawn tourists and devotees since its inception in 2000. The day started with a Mass followed by a parade and a street dance competition.
The San Roque Chapel in this freeport was built during the Spanish time and was turned into an ecumenical chapel when the Americans took over the naval base after World War II. It was re-established as a Catholic chapel when the Subic Naval Base was turned over to the Philippine government.
The chapel houses the 106-year-old statue of San Roque, which was made in Segovia, Spain, and was given to the people of Olongapo by the town of San Roque (now Cavite City) in 1905. It was returned to the chapel in 2007, after it was kept by the Macaraeg family of Olongapo since after the war. (Anthony Bayarong)
