Sugar industry players await Coke’s concrete action
July 15, 2011
SUGAR industry leaders belonging to the Confederation of Sugar Producers Associations (Confed) lamented that Coca-Cola is yet to fulfill its promise to stop the importation of premix sugar in the country.
Raymond Montinola, chairman of Confed-Negros Panay Chapter, said Wednesday that Coke in a meeting with Sugar Regulatory Administration (SRA) Administrator Gina Martin and some sugar leaders said that the beverage company cancelled its importation orders of premix for the third and fourth quarter of this year.
Despite that statement, Montinola pointed out that Coke has not taken any definite action to stop the importation.
“Our decision to stop the boycott of Coke products and hold more protest actions would depend on the fulfillment of Coke to stop the importation of premix sugar,” said Montinola.
He also clarified that, in that meeting at the office of the Philippine Millers Association in Makati, Confed was only invited to listen but did not directly participate.
Further, he stressed that Confed is one with multi-sectoral group Sugar Watch on the stand regarding the issue about premix importation.
“We will continue validating the promises of Coke. Hopefully, the company would be true to its promise,” Montinola added.
On the importation of High Fructose Corn Syrup (HFCS), Montinola said that Coke is very silent on the matter.
“Personally, I assess the situation that sugar premix was an interim product but they will definitely go to high fructose corn syrup, just like what is being practiced in the US,” he said.
“That’s part of our demand for Coke to stop the importation of high fructose corn syrup because that is a substitute for domestic refined sugar that will definitely affect us. They said that they did not book any, but there was no mention of not buying. So for the mean time, they are not looking for high fructose and premix because, for them, prices here is viable,” Montinola further said.
Confed director Jose Luis Tongoy meanwhile said that Coke took advantage of some gray areas in the Tariff Code.
He added that on Thursday, they are set to appear in a hearing on the case filed by the Bureau of Customs on premix importation. “We hope that the decision would be favorable on our part,” he said.
