Sugar Watch to continue boycott of Coke products

MULTISECTORAL group Sugar Watch declared that it will continue the boycott against the products of Coca Cola if the beverage company continues with the importation of premix sugar and High Fructose Corn Syrup (HFCS).
Hernani Braza, one of the convenors of Sugar Watch, said that despite the slump in the price of locally produced sugar, Coke still continues the importation.

On the other hand, JB Baylon, public affairs and communication director of Coca-Cola and president of the Beverage Industry Association of the Philippines, explained that the company imports premixes because of the high price of sugar in the country.
“Now that the price of domestic sugar has gone down, why do they continue to buy the premix from Thailand? They are just after raking in profits while killing the sugar industry in the country and making Thailand richer,” Braza pointed out.
He stressed that Coca Cola has the moral responsibility to buy the domestic product of the country where the company conducts its business.
Baylon also said that, since last week, Coca Cola has been negotiating for the purchase of sugar here in the Philippines.
“Just the other day, I was surprised by the volume of sugar that Coca Cola is going to purchase here in the country,” he bared without going into the specific figure.
He also assured that if the total importation cost of premix would be higher than the price of sugar here, Coca Cola will definitely prefer to buy domestic sugar.
Meanwhile, Braza expressed hope that Governor Alfredo Marañon, Jr. can find a way to mediate between Sugar Watch and Coca Cola for a negotiation.
According to Braza, Sugar Watch plans to bring the matter to the attention of Bacolod City Government officials because the plant of Coca Cola is within the city’s jurisdiction and it is the City Government that issues the business permit to the company.
