Survey: Hunger prevalence lowest in 4 years
July 2, 2011
MALACANANG on Friday said it will further trim down the number of poor Filipinos in the next five years after an independent pollster said the hunger incidence dipped to a four-year low in June.
Social Weather Stations survey conducted from June 3 to 6 showed that hunger has gone down by over a million in the past three months, from 4.1 million in March to three million last June.
“We view these numbers as encouraging, reflecting, as they do, the perceptions and opinions of our countrymen at a particular period in time,” Presidential spokesperson Edwin Lacierda said in a statement.
He noted that the only way for these numbers to have an enduring and meaningful impact on public perception “is to have a tangible and lasting impact on actual poverty”.
The number of poor Filipinos has reached 23.1 million in 2009 from 22.2 million in 2006, according to the National Statistical Coordination Board (NSCB).
Lacierda said that the Aquino administration will continue to address poverty through the conditional cash transfer (CCT) program, which benefit poor families in the nation.
Specifically, the CCT provides cash grants to extremely poor households to improve their health, nutrition and education particularly of children aged 0 to 14.
President Benigno Aquino III is set to witness the enrolment of the two millionth beneficiary of the multi-billion peso program on July 4.
“Maybe the effect of the CCT program has been felt already that’s why the number of hungry Filipinos went down. However, this is a perception survey, so the figures could either go up or down in the next quarter depending on the circumstances during the survey period,” Ramon Casiple, executive director of Institute for Political and Economic Reform (Iper) told Sun.Star.
Of the P1.816-trillion budget proposal for 2012, the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) will receive the largest budgetary increase among departments at 56 percent to P53.6 billion in 2012 from P34.3 billion this year.
President Aquino had said that hike in fund allotments will allow the DSWD to support three million households next year under CCT program from the expected 2.3 million families in 2011.
As expected, communist rebels negotiating for a final peace deal with the Aquino administration said Malacañang only peddled false hopes.
