Trade office holds forum on free trade agreements

CLARK FREEPORT — The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) held simultaneous sectoral discussions on different free trade agreements (FTAs) of the Philippines early this week.
DTI Central Luzon information officer Wilfred Carbonell said the sessions, dubbed “Doing Business in Free Trade Areas (DBFTA) II,” seek to educate stakeholders in the region’s priority sectors, namely food, homestyle (furniture and furnishings, gifts and housewares) and wearables (garments, textiles, jewelries, bags and hats) on the benefits and how to utilize the Japan-Philippines Economic Partnership Agreement (JPEPA), Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean) Free Trade Area, Asean-China FTA, Asean-Japan FTA, Asean-Korea FTA, Asean-Australia-New Zealand FTA and the soon to be ratified Asean-India FTA.
Carbonell said among the topics that were discussed include market opportunities per FTA, tariff ranges of FTA markets and Rules of Origin (ROO) in FTA markets.
There were also open forums, testimonials from those who have benefitted from the FTAs, special sessions on market updates and design trends for non-food industries, a review of acknowledged Food Safety Assurance Systems (FSAS) for food industries, and help desks that provided company-level assistances.
Carbonell said this year’s DBFTA II is the third to be conducted after Metro Manila and Aklan.
Similar sessions will also be held in the province of Laguna, as well as in the cities of Cebu, Davao, Legaspi, General Santos, Zamboanga, Bacolod, Cagayan De Oro and Baguio.
