Trinidad mart stall holders seek discount

LA TRINIDAD, Benguet — A formal letter by local market stall concessionaires is asking for a bit of leeway on rent.
Received and noted by the local council this week, the letter sent by various stall concessioners asked councilors to lower rental rates to P200 per square meter.
Going rates now stand at P290 per square meter at the 2002 market building.
“We respectfully reiterate our request for the adjustment of rates rent of stalls at the 3rd floor of the public market building,” the letter-petition read.
It was signed by more than 30 stall owners who said they feel disadvantaged on the rental paid as compared to other floors in the building.
“Business at the third floor is considerably slower compared to brisk business characterizing the stalls of the second and first floors,” the letter read.
Owners at the market building pay the same rent regardless of what floor they occupy, pushing top floor owners to lament.
“There are even times we have to coax our customers to move up the building so we could have business there,” the petitioners added.
The new public market of the municipality of La Trinidad that was built around 2006, with the old market nearby, was demolished in order to give parking space for vegetable traders’ vehicles.
The lowered rate for rental would compensate the disadvantage of occupying the uppermost floor of the building, the stall owners said.
“Throughout one year of doing business at our stalls, we have felt how steep the current rate of rent is,” they said in their letter.
If a mall project pushed through in the valley, a walkway connecting the market to the mall, as well as terminal local jeepneys is envisioned to be made to make business easier for stall owners and not to kill local business.
