Typhoon Mina weakens

Sunday, August 28, 2011
MANILA (Updated 6:43 a.m.) — Typhoon “Mina” (international codename: Namnadol) has weakened further and continues to move in a north northwest direction, said the weather bureau Sunday.
The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) spotted the typhoon at 90 kilometers south southwest of Basco, Batanes as of 5 a.m. Sunday, hours after it killed seven people in Northern Luzon.
The weather bureau also lowered the public storm warning signal over the Batanes Group of Island, northern Cagayan, Babuyan Group of Island and Calayan Group of Island from 4 to 3.
Storm signal number 2, however, remains hoisted over Ilocos Norte, Abra, Apayao, Kalinga and the rest of Cagayan, while signal number 1 remains over the provinces of Ilocos Sur, La Union, Mountain Province, Benguet, Ifugao, Nueva Vizcaya, Quirino, Isabela and northern Aurora.
Mina, which is packing winds of 140 kilometers per hour (kph) near the center and gustiness of up to 170 kph as of 5 a.m. Sunday, triggered landslides in Pangasinan and Baguio City on Saturday, causing the death of at least six people.
The typhoon buried a hillside house before dawn Saturday, killing two young siblings in San Fabian town, Pangasinan. The victims were identified as Reajen Bautista, 6, and her brother John Rey Bautista, 5.
The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) said the siblings were buried in the mud and other debris for more than two hours before rescuers recovered their bodies.
In Baguio City, two siblings also died after a garbage dump’s concrete wall collapsed, burying three shanties under tons of garbage.
The NDRRMC identified the victims as Revillar Flores, 13, and Apolinario Flores, 10, who were swept about 300 yards (meters) downhill.
Another fatality in Baguio City identified as Floro Sulliven, 32, of Barangay Kias, also died after he was covered by a landslide.
Nelson Vergara, 68, of Barangay Bagong Sirang, Baras, Catanduanes, was also reported dead. His body retrieved by coastal residents of Barangay Putsan Darao around 7:30 a.m. Saturday.
Six other people also went missing due to the typhoon.
Reports about the fatalities came after Mina made landfall near Cagayan province’s Gonzaga town at 7:55 a.m. Saturday. Several residents in the affected areas earlier evacuated.
Power interruption was also experienced in Kalinga, Cagayan, and some parts of Isabela, including Santiago City and San Pablo, due to the typhoon.
The government has prepositioned P21.16 million worth of standby funds and relief supplies for the victims, said reports Sunday.
Pagasa advised residents in low-lying and mountainous areas under the public storm warning signals to be vigilant against possible flashfloods and landslides in spite of the lowering of the warning signals elsewhere.
Those living in coastal areas were also alerted against big waves or storm surges generated by the tropical cyclone.
The weather bureau said Mina is expected to be 110 kilometers northwest of Basco, Batanes by Monday; 280 kilometers north northwest of Basco, Batanes by Tuesday; and 440 kilometers north of Basco by Wednesday. (Sunnex)
