UAAP: Ateneo stops UST to book finals seat

MANILA — Ateneo de Manila made a return trip to the championship series for the fourth straight year after turning back University of Santo Tomas (UST), 69-66, in the semi-finals of the 74th UAAP men’s basketball tournament Thursday.
Before a near capacity crowd at the Araneta Coliseum, the Eagles survived the outside shooting of the Tigers, who tried to but failed to force a rubber match set on Sunday.
“We have controlled the game for most of the first part but they were able to cut it out. Our defense was also bad,” Ateneo’s champion mentor Norman Black told reporters.
Good thing, the Eagles responded by firming its hold of the leather in the dying seconds of the game as vastly-improved Jeric Fortuna muffed a triple to the delight of the defending champions.
UST kept within three, 66-69, courtesy of Jeric Teng’s trifecta in the last 2.7 seconds but the Tigers could not just find their groove from there.
The Eagles, who topped the double-round eliminations, only yielded to the Adamson Falcons this season for a 13-1 (win-loss) slate.
The team also holds a twice-to-beat advantage going into the 17-year-old Final Four format.
“We have a formula in winning. We are used to this (crunch situations),” Ateneo’s veteran forward Nico Salva said, who contributed 12 points and four assists in 27 minutes of play.
Adamson, which holds the other twice-to-beat bonus after finishing second at 10-4, is currently battling Far Eastern University (FEU) for the other finals berth as of this posting.
