University mounts Rizal exhibit

THE Holy Angel University Center for Kapampangan Studies (CKS) will hold an exhibit entitled “Rizal and the Kapampangans” at SM City Clark on September 15 to 21 as part of the celebration of National History Week.
The exhibit, which contains history panels, Rizal memorabilia and artworks, is also in line with the nation’s continuing celebration of the national hero’s 150th birth anniversary.

The exhibit’s centerpiece is an 1886 edition of Noli Me Tangere, one of the first 200 copies of the first printing of Rizal’s first novel. The copy is owned by Lord Francis Musni, consultant of the Center for Kapampangan Studies.
Also part of the exhibit is Jorge Cuyugan’s collection of Rizaliana coins and bills dating back to 1903, as well as the complete Rizaliana stamp collection (1900 to 1961, including the commemorative stamps of 1996 and 2011), also owned by the noted Kapampangan numismatist and philatelist.
A local artists’ group, Kapampangang Mangule at Gugulis, is also participating in the exhibit by showcasing relevant artworks.
The exhibit is a partnership between the University, SM City Clark and the National Historical Commission of the Philippines, which contributed facsimiles of the original manuscripts of Noli Me Tangere and El Filibusterismo.
According to Ian Christopher Alfonso, CKS researcher and exhibit coordinator, Pampanga and Kapampangans played important roles in Rizal’s life and works. For example, poet Monico Mercado of Sasmuan (a distant relative of Rizal’s) made the first translation of Mi Ultimo Adios.
Jose Alejandrino of Arayat, who was Rizal’s roommate, helped the national hero prepare the manuscript of El Filibusterismo, while Valentin Ventura of Bacolor financed its publication.
Rizal visited his Kapampangan friends in San Fernando and Bacolor after the Manila-Dagupan railway was opened, to establish local La Liga chapters and probably to visit a local lass named Rosario Joven, according to oral tradition.
The exhibit, Alfonso said, will shed light on what Kapampangans meant to Rizal then and what Rizal means to Kapampangans today.
The exhibit will open on Thursday, September 15 at 5 p.m. at the mall’s Events Center.
