Vice mayor flares up on media attacks on daughter
July 11, 2011
DAVAO City Vice Mayor Rodrigo Duterte lost his cool when national television news reporters, anchors and newspaper columnists ganged up on his daughter, Mayor Sara Duterte, following the punching incident involving the city’s chief executive and a court sheriff.
“When the punching incident happened, what did I tell the media? Didn’t I say I will not comment because I might get socked as well. That was a joke just so I will not comment and help to protect everyone involved. For two days, I did not comment on the incident. But when my daughter became the subject of opinion columns, and she was being insulted at that, that’s when I blew up,” Duterte said in vernacular.
The city mayor was caught by television cameras last July 1 punching sheriff Abe Andres, who was serving a writ of demolition days before this was supposed to be served in Barangay Kapitan Tomas Monteverde Sr. in Soliman, Agdao district.
Vice Mayor Duterte said that those who were making their comments did not even know about the law that Andres was violating by hurriedly serving the writ of demolition.
“But in the lines sa mga bakbak kay Inday pati na ‘yung mga announcers sa ABS-CBN, mukha ganing marunong masyado. (Inday was attacked by announcers, with ABS-CBN announcers sounding as if they know it all). They think that they are wise and… They gave opinions, left and right without thinking or even investigating the other side,” Duterte said in his television show, “Gikan sa Masa, Para sa Masa”.
The vice mayor also chided Supreme Court spokesperson Jose Midas Marquez for speaking about the incident “even without knowing the facts.”
Marquez was quoted on television as saying that when the Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) investigation team arrived in Davao City and could not locate Andres, that was because the sheriff was already in hiding for fear of his life.
“Kini si Midas, kana imong baba papogi-pogi ka lang. Medyo okey ka naman unta pero kanang imong baba natakdan sa foot and mouth disease (This Midas, he thinks he can get away with just his looks. He was doing all right before, but has seemingly been afflicted with the foot-in-mouth disease),” Duterte said, adding that Marquez, along with the commissioner of human rights, Etta Rosales deserves a check-up by a veterinarian.
“Do not go for dramatic. Every now and then, you are asked to comment, huwag ka masyadong pa-pogi, masyadong ma-drama. Di man ka actor (don’t add drama to your statements because you are not an actor). Do not do it in times like this,” he said.
The best lesson to be learned in the Agdao demolition incident is for people to investigate first before opening their mouths, he added.
