Victims’ kin mark anniversary of Manila hostage crisis Tuesday,

MANILA — A simple Buddhist ritual was held Tuesday at the Quirino Grandstand to mark the anniversary of the August 23, 2010 hijacking of a tourist bus, where eight Hong Kong nationals and the Filipino hostage taker were killed.
Buddhist monks joined a survivor and families of the slain victims in the ceremony held at the scene of the inciden
t. The victims’ relatives and a survivor flew to Manila Monday to commemorate hostage crisis.
Eight Hong Kong tourists were killed and seven others were injured when dismissed police officer Rolando Mendoza took hostage a bus full of tourists at the Quirino grandstand near the Luneta Park on August 23, 2010. Mendoza was also killed by a sniper.
Present during the ritual were Tourism Secretary Alberto Lim and tourist police officials led by Superintendent Roberto Rongavilla.
Filipino anti-crime groups were also present.
Families of victims killed in a hostage standoff in Manila on Monday reiterated demands for a formal apology and financial compensation from the Philippine government, a year after the incident.
Survivor Lee Ying Chuen said a year after the incident, she remains angry and still seeks justice.
The families also said that they have not received justice, and are still disappointed in the Philippine government.
Meanwhile, protests were also held Tuesday outside the Philippine consulate in Hong Kong to mark the Manila hostage drama’s anniversary. (Sunnex)
