Wines from this fifty kilometer area located between the villages of Chavanay in the north to Guilherand in the south were sold to French royalty as early as the 1500’s. The area contains vineyards from 26 separate communes, and the lands were incorporated in the 1950’s and 1960’s to form one appellation. Jesuit priests gave Saint-Joseph its name in the 1700’s. The red wines have good color and are more delicate than the wines of Hermitage. They are usually ready for drinking within the first five years of life. They are well-perfumed, containing red and black cherries and wild flowers. The wines also usually have hints of earth and herbes de provence which adds complexity and gives the wine a bucolic feel. White Saint-Joseph is supple and also for early consumption. The wines are perfumed and ripe yet well focused. Pierre et Jean Gonon make a fine example that shows the advantages of old vines.
