Workers give Aquino failing mark

A WORKERS’ organization has given President Benigno Aquino III a failing mark in terms of achieving his only employment-related promise in his first State of the Nation Address (Sona).
The Kilusang Mayo Uno (KMU) lamented in a statement how Aquino failed to meet his promise last year to generate more employment in the country.
“Almost one year after, President Aquino has failed to generate employment, his only employment-specific promise in his 2010 Sona. This is his only promise that speaks directly to our advocacies on wages, employment and trade-union rights, yet he has failed to fulfill it,” said KMU Secretary-General Roger Soluta.
“Workers and poor people really have nothing good to expect from Aquino,” he added.
To recall, Aquino reiterated in his first Sona that “creating jobs is foremost” in his administration.
The KMU cited the latest Labor Force Survey (LFS) as proof that the government has failed in its promise to create jobs and reduce unemployment rate.
Based on the April 2011 LFS, the unemployment rate was placed at 7.2 percent, which is down from 8.0 percent recorded last year of the same period.
This, in effect, means that there is an estimated 2.9 million unemployed Filipinos in April 2011, compared to the more than three million jobless last year.
