7 people oppose de Lima’s candidacy for Chief Justice
Screening body Judicial and Bar Council (JBC) has received at least seven letters from lawyers and certain individuals who are opposed to the possible appointment of Justice Secretary Leila de Lima as Chief Justice of the Supreme Court.
Among those who are opposed to her nomination are lawyers Arturo de Castro and Frumencio Pulgar, who feared a slow administration of justice under de Lima because of her penchant for “sensational cases.”
De Lima’s defiance of a temporary restraining order (TRO) released by the Supreme Court allowing former President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo and her party to leave the country last November was the reason cited by certain Jericho Urquiola and Shiela Marie Gargolez of Iloilo City.
They said the Justice chief disregarded the authority of the highest court of the land when she barred Arroyo, a suspected plunderer, from seeking medical treatment abroad. As a result, de Lima was slapped with a disbarment case, which has yet to be resolved by the Integrated Bar of the Philippines (IBP).
Others who opposed de Lima’s candidacy are Paul Camillon, Dr. Oscar Noble and Rico Paolo Quicho, one of the lawyers of deposed Chief Justice Renato Corona.
De Lima testified against Corona in his impeachment trial last February, heavily quoting the dissenting opinion of Associate Justice Maria Lourdes Sereno, who said that not all conditions in the TRO were met by Arroyo and husband Jose Miguel.
“Surely, there is not a dearth of good men and women from whose ranks the next Chief Justice of the land may be selected,” Quicho said.
The JBC will accept opposition to the nominees for Chief Justice until July 20, four days before the vetting body will begin to quiz applicants to determine their fitness to lead the judiciary.
