Angeles City commemorates Rizal’s 151st birthday

ANGELES CITY — The City Government, together with the Order of the Knights of Rizal (KOR), led the people Monday in honoring national hero Dr. Jose Rizal during the simple celebration of his 151st birthday.

Acting Mayor Vicky Vega-Cabigting led the wreath laying ceremonies at the City Hall. She was joined by officers and members of the KOR headed by their Supreme Commander Reghis Romero.

In her speech, Vega-Cabigting said Rizal is an example of Filipino spirit through his selflessness and love for the country.

“Let us not allow the death of Rizal to die in the current generation. The death should not symbolize our loss of hope, but should manifest a challenge to employees of the city government on how they can put a ‘death’ to complacency in the workplace,” Vega-Cabigting said.

For his part, Romero narrated Rizal’s life and works through a short story detailing that the hero’s values from childhood until his death should be emulated by Filipinos everywhere.

“We should emulate the heroism of Dr. Rizal, whose supreme sacrifice paved the way for the freedom the country enjoys,” Romero said.

He added that “the love of country is the most heroic value that we can display.”

Romero also lauded Mayor Edgardo Pamintuan and his administration in giving importance in the commemoration of the birth and death of Rizal every year.

At present, the KOF has 15 active chapters in Angeles City, which members come from the Philippine National Police, the business sector, senior citizens, officials from the Tropang Crime Watch and other public and private organizations.

Republic Act 646 officially recognizes the Order of the Knights of Rizal as a convenient instrumentality by which the teachings of our national hero may be propagated among our people to the end that they emulate and follow his examples.

Rizal, a polymath, patriot and prominent advocate for reform in the Philippines during the Spanish colonial era, was executed by a firing squad of the Spanish rulers on December 30, 1896.
